How EFT Helps with Anxiety Disorders

Understanding Anxiety Disorders

Let’s face it—anxiety can feel overwhelming. That constant worry, fear, or nervousness doesn’t seem to disappear, making everyday life challenging. Anxiety disorders come in many forms, including:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): That nagging worry about everything and anything.
  • Panic Disorder: Sudden, intense episodes of fear, also known as panic attacks.
  • Social Anxiety Disorder: Fear of social situations or being judged by others.
  • Specific Phobias: Intense fears of particular objects or situations.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Unwanted, repetitive thoughts or behaviors.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Anxiety that lingers after a traumatic experience.

The Science and Biology of Anxiety

Anxiety often stems from the way our brain processes fear and stress. Here are the key players:

  • Amygdala: This part of the brain acts like an alarm system, alerting us to danger. When overactive, it can strengthen fear responses.
  • Prefrontal Cortex: This area helps us rationally think through fears. If it’s not working optimally, calming down becomes harder.

On a biological level, anxiety involves imbalances in chemicals like serotonin and GABA, along with elevated levels of cortisol (the stress hormone). Past experiences, genetics, and life circumstances also play a significant role in how anxiety shows up for each of us.

What Are Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)?

EFT, or “tapping,” is a gentle yet powerful way to calm your mind and body. Imagine combining elements of traditional Chinese medicine with modern psychology—that’s EFT. It involves tapping specific points on your body while focusing on what’s bothering you.

The Science and Biology Behind EFT

EFT isn’t just a feel-good technique; it’s backed by science! Here’s how it works:

  • Calms Your Nervous System: Tapping helps shift your body from “fight-or-flight” mode to a calmer “rest-and-digest” state.
  • Lowers Stress Hormones: Studies show EFT can reduce cortisol levels, helping your body relax.
  • Rewires Your Brain: EFT helps reprogram how your brain reacts to stressors by combining tapping with specific thoughts or memories.

Research Supporting EFT

The evidence is clear: EFT works. Studies have shown:

  • Significant reductions in anxiety after just one session.
  • Lowered cortisol levels and improved emotional well-being.
  • Results that are comparable to, or even better than, traditional therapy methods for specific conditions.

My Journey with EFT

There was a time in my life when I self-medicated with various addictive substances and behaviors to suppress anxiety. Learning and applying EFT has been a massive help in relieving anxiety and releasing the need to turn to substances and behaviors to avoid it. It has enabled me to calm down and be relieved of anxiety, as well as get to the roots of my anxiety. In other words, EFT helped me uncover what was triggering my anxiety.

In my work with clients to help them achieve emotional freedom, anxiety often comes up. We work together to get to the roots and to re-pattern the brain so it can be anxiety-free. This transformation is not only possible but also life-changing.

How to Apply EFT for Anxiety Disorders

Trying EFT is simple, and you can do it anywhere. Here’s how:

  1. Identify What’s Bothering You: Focus on a specific thought, memory, or feeling causing anxiety.
  2. Rate Your Intensity: Measure the emotion’s strength on a scale of 0-10.
  3. Create a Setup Statement: Say, “Even though I feel [emotion], I deeply and completely accept myself.”
  4. Tap the Points: Gently tap these areas while repeating your setup statement:.
    • Top of the Head
    • Eyebrow
    • Side of the Eye
    • Under the Eye
    • Under the Nose
    • Chin
    • Collarbone
    • Under the Arm
  5. Reassess and Repeat: After a round of tapping, check on your intensity. Keep going until you feel calmer.

When to See a Professional

EFT is an excellent tool you can use alone, but sometimes, extra support makes all the difference. Consider reaching out to a professional if:

  • Anxiety feels unmanageable or impacts your daily life.
  • You’re dealing with other conditions like depression or PTSD.
  • You want personalized guidance to make EFT even more effective.

A certified EFT practitioner can help you uncover more profound issues and work through them in a safe, supportive way.
