Healing Anxiety & Disordered Eating with EFT: A Gentle Path to Feeling Safe in Your Body

by

Do you find yourself reaching for food when you’re overwhelmed? Or maybe restricting your eating to avoid uncomfortable emotions? If you’ve struggled with stress eating, emotional eating, or other disordered eating behaviors, you’re not alone—and you’re not broken.
In truth, these behaviors are often attempts to numb or avoid anxiety. Beneath the surface of these patterns is usually an ongoing, often unacknowledged, sense of fear or unease in the body. And anxiety, at its core, is fueled by fear-based thoughts, often rooted in painful experiences or limiting beliefs we’ve carried for years.

The good news is that there is a way to gently shift this cycle and begin to feel safe in your skin.

🌸 Why Anxiety Fuels Disordered Eating

Our nervous system is wired to keep us safe. But when we’ve experienced stress, trauma, or lack of emotional support, it can become stuck in a loop of fight, flight, or freeze. This often results in a constant hum of anxiety, and our mind seeks relief in any way it can.

Food can temporarily soothe anxiety, as can distraction, restriction, or other habits that offer a sense of control or numbness. But the real path to peace begins with regulating the nervous system and reminding the body that it’s safe, right now, in this very moment.

✋ EFT Tapping: A Science-Backed Way to Calm the Body

One of the most effective ways I’ve found to help regulate the nervous system and ease anxiety is EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), also known as tapping.

Tapping involves gently stimulating acupressure points on the body while focusing on your emotional experience. It helps calm the fight-or-flight response and brings you into a state of grounded, present-moment awareness. Over time, this creates new safety patterns in the brain and body.

💗 Begin by Creating a Sense of Safety

Before diving into the emotional work, I encourage you to make friends with your body and build trust with yourself by practicing daily rituals that tell your nervous system, “You are safe.”

Simple practices include:

  • Gentle tapping on the collarbone while breathing deeply
  • Havening techniques (light, self-soothing touch from shoulders to elbows)
  • Rocking the body or hugging yourself
  • Bringing your hands to your heart and whispering reassuring words
  • Butterfly tapping before meals to activate the parasympathetic (rest and digest) system

These are not just techniques—they are acts of self-love and compassion.

🌬️ A Sample Tapping Sequence to Calm Anxiety

Karate Chop Point (Side of Hand):

Even though I’m feeling anxious, I deeply and completely accept myself.
Even though there’s so much tension in my body, I choose to offer myself love and compassion.

Top of Head:

All of this anxiety in my body.

Eyebrow Point:

My nervous system feels overwhelmed.

Side of Eye:

I remind myself: In this moment, I am safe.

Under Eye:

Breathing in safety, breathing out tension.

Under Nose:

I release the need to hold onto this fear.

Chin Point:

I can feel my body starting to soften.

Collarbone Point:

In this moment, ease and flow.

Under Arm:

It’s safe to let go.

Take a deep breath and gently place your hands over your heart. You are learning to care for your body like a loving guardian—one tap, one breath at a time.
